Lesson Overview:
This lesson is all about stretching and exploring with materials and making discoveries! I start by introducing materials to students, in this case, Mod Podge glue applied with a paint brush and tissue paper of various colors. After explaining the appropriate way to use Mod Podge glue, I have students guide me through a demonstration through methodical questioning. I show them a square of tissue paper in my hands and ask how I can change the shape with my hands. After we discuss how we can rip, fold, crumple cut and layer our tissue paper to create desired shapes, I allow students to explore with the materials however they would like. This creates an important opportunity for them to discover, on their own, the creative possibilities of the materials. Later I taught students about collage and collage artists and the many different possibilities of collage. Students then have the freedom to create a collage of their choice whether it was abstract, a landscape, an animal, favorite food or a picture that told a story! Students did a wonderful job of handling the materials and each student's work was unique and said something about their vibrant personality.
